Your First Trip with Special Journeys: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Going on your first Special Journeys trip can bring a mix of excitement and nerves for both travelers and their caregivers. If this is your first time considering a vacation with us, you probably have questions. What will it be like? Who will be there? How do I get my loved one ready?
We get it. Trying something new can feel overwhelming. But we’re here to walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and why this could be the start of something wonderful.
It’s Normal to Feel Nervous at First
For many of our travelers, this is their first time going somewhere without family. That’s a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel unsure. Whether your loved one lives at home or in a group setting, this experience may be unlike anything they’ve done before. That’s why our staff takes extra care to ease anxieties and offer support from day one. We’ve led over 400 trips, and we understand how to guide first-time travelers and their families every step of the way.
What to Expect on a Special Journeys Trip
Our trips are more than vacations. They are carefully planned experiences full of connection, joy, and adventure. Travelers are grouped into small teams led by trained chaperones who handle everything from medication management to making sure everyone feels included. A typical day might include sightseeing, group meals, downtime for rest, and of course, lots of laughter. Whether it’s dancing in Nashville, riding bumper cars on a cruise ship, or exploring an aquarium, every activity is chosen with accessibility and enjoyment in mind. Families and caregivers can rest easy knowing their loved ones are not only safe, they’re having a great time.
How to Prepare: Tips for a Smooth First Trip
Preparation can help ease everyone’s mind. We’ll send a packing list and detailed itinerary ahead of time, but here are a few tips to get started:
- Talk about the trip regularly so it becomes familiar and exciting
• Look at photos and videos from past trips to get a feel for what it’s like
• Practice packing together; it’s a great way to get your traveler involved
• Label all personal items, especially medications, clothing, and assistive devices
• Reassure your loved one that they’ll be with kind people who are there to help
If you have specific concerns, from dietary needs to communication styles, just let us know. We tailor every trip to meet individual needs, and we’re happy to work closely with you to make the experience as smooth and joyful as possible.
A Trip That Opens Doors
Many of our travelers return from their first trip with a whole new sense of confidence. They’ve made friends. They’ve tried something new. They’ve felt the joy of independence, and that feeling stays with them long after they’re home. For caregivers, the reward is just as powerful: seeing your loved one grow, thrive, and experience the world in ways you may not have thought possible.
Why Special Journeys Is Different
At Special Journeys, we don’t just create vacations. We create opportunities. Our trips are built on decades of experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to support adults with disabilities while offering real adventure, fun, and freedom.
