Packing with Purpose: What to Bring on a Special Journeys Trip

Packing with Purpose: What to Bring on a Special Journeys Trip

Getting ready for a Special Journeys trip brings a sense of excitement — and, sometimes, a few nerves too. Whether this is your first vacation with us or your fifth, packing can feel like a big job. What should I bring? What will the weather be like? Will my loved one be comfortable?

We get it. Packing isn’t just about clothes in a suitcase; it’s about helping your traveler feel confident, prepared, and ready for an unforgettable experience. We’re here to help you know what to bring, how to prepare, and how to pack with joy and purpose.

It’s More Than a Suitcase,  It’s a Support System

For many of our travelers, packing is part of the mental and emotional preparation. They want to know what to expect, feel secure about what they’re bringing, and have familiar things close by. Caregivers often worry about forgetting something important or packing too much. That’s why we provide detailed packing lists before every trip;so you don’t have to guess.

Our lists are built from decades of experience and hundreds of successful trips, from cool-weather tours to warm-weather adventures; including our very first Disney Cruise this September!

We want every traveler to arrive feeling ready and excited, not overwhelmed. And packing with care is one of the best ways to set that tone.

What to Expect: Packing Categories Made Simple

Our packing lists are broken down into three main groups: required, recommended, and optional items. You’ll always receive a trip-specific list ahead of time, but here’s a general guide to get you started:

Required Items:

  • Comfortable clothes for each day of the trip

  • Undergarments, socks, pajamas

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, brush/comb

  • Any required medications (plus extra days for safety)

  • ID or passport (depending on the trip)

  • Spending money for snacks and souvenirs

Tip: For cruises, we encourage bringing a nice outfit for formal dinner nigh; a dress, tie, or whatever feels fun!

Recommended Items:

  • Light jacket or sweater

  • Laundry bag for dirty clothes

  • Bathing suit and beach towel (for trips with pools or cruises)

  • Extra batteries for devices

  • Flashlight or night light

Optional Comfort Items:

  • Favorite snacks or sensory items

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm

  • Rain jacket or umbrella

  • Notebook, camera, or small comfort object (like a plush or familiar pillowcase)

Tips for Caregivers: Making Packing Easier

Packing is a great opportunity to involve your traveler and start getting them excited about the adventure ahead. Here are a few caregiver tips that go beyond the checklist:

  • Practice packing together. Let your traveler help choose outfits and pack their bag with support.

  • Label everything. Clearly mark clothing, medications, and personal items with their name.

  • Talk about the trip ahead of time. Look through photos from past trips, talk about the destination, and discuss daily routines.

  • Stick to familiar products. If your traveler prefers a specific shampoo, toothpaste, or snack, it’s okay to bring it along.

  • Keep it simple. Travelers don’t need anything fancy; just the basics, comfort, and a few familiar touches.

Why It Matters

Packing with purpose helps ease anxiety, encourage independence, and set your loved one up for a successful trip. It’s not just about what goes in the suitcase; it’s about the confidence that comes from being prepared and the joy that comes from knowing everything they need is right there with them.

We’ve watched travelers light up with pride when they open their bag and find their favorite shirt, or when they hand over their labeled medication pouch to their chaperone. These little moments are big steps toward growth and confidence.

Why Special Journeys Is Different

At Special Journeys, we’ve planned over 400 fully chaperoned, all-inclusive trips, and we’ve packed a lot of suitcases along the way. We know what helps travelers feel comfortable, safe, and seen. We help caregivers feel confident too, by offering personalized packing lists, clear communication, and thoughtful preparation from the moment you sign up.

We don’t just offer vacations. We create experiences rooted in respect, dignity, joy, and love… and it all starts with a well-packed bag.
